datawagon.org

This site is a work-in-progress. Expect change and breakage.

I've decided to register "datawagon.org" as the nexus of some experimentation that I am engaged around the following basic principles.

  • You should own your own data and identity. Your identity should be separate from Google, Facebook, or any other social media company. While I am not opposed ot those services per se, I do think that your social network and your data should always remain primarily under your control.
  • Maintaining an online presence should be affordable to everyone. This means that you should be able to maintain a presence for little or even no cost. If Google is willing to provide you with free email on the off chance that you will click ads for some service, then you should be able to afford a similar level of service for pennies, or even free.
  • The software you use to maintain your online presence should not just be open-source and free, but small as well. It's always advantageous to understand how software works, but not everyone (not even every professional) has the time to maintain large and complex systems with their associated complexity and security risks. Creating small software to maintain your online presence is a good idea.
